Today we’re gonna talk about the secret key to having a personal relationship with God. This subject is so important because people don’t have a personal relationship with God anymore.
It has become a very rare thing in today’s world. It’s not because people don’t want to have a relationship with God. It’s not because people don’t like God. It’s not because people are angry with God. It’s not even because people don’t have time for God. The fact is that people don’t know how to have a personal relationship with God.
Reason For The Poor State Of Personal Relationship With God
Sadly the churches and the Church denominations are some of the major reasons for this state of the people. When I say churches I don’t mean any particular church, in the same way when I say denominations I don’t mean or point out to any one particular denomination, but I address everything in general.
The religious teachings have taught people today that the way to have a personal relationship with God is only through prayer and going to the church. They have unfortunately made religion as a passage to God. Some of the churches even teach by-hearted prayers there by making prayer as a recital and something that just comes by-heart, instead of talking to God personally from their heart.
Going to church has become a tradition and something that we must do in order to be in perfect relationship with God And not because we wanna do it out of our love for God.
Unfortunately prayer has become one of the most boring part of anyone’s life. Of course if you’re not talking to God from your heart but just praying by-hearted prayers, then how do you expect it to be interesting?
OR just come to the presence of God and make a wish-list and ask God for all the things that you need, that your family needs, and that your relatives need, and the society needs, and finally just say OK God bye – In Jesus name Amen!
A WISHLIST PRAYER!
This is the so-called prayer of today. It’s such a sad state of the majority of Christians today but this is the reality.
We need to break free from man-made rules. That’s the first thing that you Gotta do. Follow only the Bible and let the Holy Spirit guide you into all truth.
What I am going to teach you today may offend some people. What you’re going to hear today may go against some of the traditional teachings that you have been taught over the years. But remember this, nothing changes unless you make a change. So you have to make certain changes in your habits, if you want to build a personal relationship with God.
Have you ever sat and talked to your friend, and have you noticed how the time just flies by and before you know it hours have gone by. And this is the best thing, after all that time you are still ready to go on for few more hours without being bored. However when you come to God and start praying, within seconds you start to get bored, sleepy, tired and impatient to just finish the prayer and get going on with your life.
Why is this?
You can hardly spend time in prayer. Why?
This is because we are not communicating with God from our heart. We are not having a conversation with God but we are only just doing a formality called prayer!
We’re going to see today on how to overcome this problem and instead have a wonderful conversation with God every time you go into his presence.
Communication and conversation are the basis of a relationship. It is only when you communicate with one another you build a relationship. So let us learn the basics of how to build a personal relationship with our loving heavenly father today.
Religion has taught people that when you pray you’re supposed to kneel down or stand in attention, fold your arms or hold your palms while praying, close your eyes, etc.
I’m not saying that these are wrong. These are good practices and one should do it, but you should know when and where to do it. This is not the only way of praying!
DO NOT CONFUSE PRAYER WITH TALKING TO GOD TO BUILD A RELATIONSHIP.
THESE ARE 2 DIFFERENT THINGS.
LET ME EXPLAIN.
PRAYER IS A DIFFERENT MODE OF COMMUNICATION WITH GOD.
IT IS MORE FOCUSSED AND SUBJECT ORIENTED. DO NOT STOP OR REPLACE THAT WITH WHAT I AM GOING TO TEACH YOU TODAY!
LET YOUR PRAYERS CONTINUE BUT WHAT I AM ASKING YOU TO DO IS TO START BUILDING A RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD BY TALKING TO HIM PERSONALLY.
Our God is interested in talking about any subject with you. Our God loves you so much that he just wants you to spend time with him and he’s ready to listen and talk to you on any subject that you are interested in. God says I am always ready for anything that you want to talk about.
Let us read:
1 Peter 3:12 (KJV) For the eyes of the Lord [are] over the righteous, and his ears [are open] unto their prayers: but the face of the Lord [is] against them that do evil.
His eyes are all over you! His ears are open. Open when? Does it specify any time? Does it specify any condition? Does it specify any subject? Nothing!! His ears are always open for anything that you want to speak! He is madly in love with you and wants to spend time with you.
But you don’t have time for him!
Isn’t it amazing and he is the one who created us and the creation does not have time for its creator!
We are going to change the situation now!
I am going to GIVE YOU 3 KEYS which is going to help you build a personal relationship with God.
KEY NUMBER 1 TO BUILD A PERSONAL RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD:
1. Choose a subject that you are most interested in and then start talking to God about that.
Just call upon the name of the Lord and tell him that today YOU want to talk to HIM about this particular subject. It may be something to do with sports, if that’s what you’re interested in. It may be something to do with politics if that’s what you’re interested in. It maybe something to do with the science and technology or whatever that you were interested in. Just go to him and start talking about it, as you would just talk to a friend of yours.
MAKE IT AS REAL AS POSSIBLE. Just Imagine that God is in front of you and listening to you as you speak to him. You need to experience that.
Let me give you an example. Imagine that you are planning to buy a house. You would have checked out at least 10 houses and now you have to decide on which one you are going to buy. There will be so many points to consider that it is a project by itself.
Now let us consider 2 scenarios:
SCENARIO NUMBER 1: You have met your close friend and you start talking to your friend about the 10 houses that you’ve seen and about the pluses and minuses of each and every house. Which one you like and which one you don’t like and the reasons for it, and the discussion would just go on for hours! You might come to a conclusion or you might not – it depends!
SCENARIO NUMBER 2: You are praying to God about the same house matter. Your prayer will be like this. Dear God, you know that I need to buy a house and so please guide me to make the perfect choice! In Jesus name, amen!
You see the difference? Why is this? Its because we think that God knows everything and so why go and explain each and everything to him? He already knows and he even knows my thoughts and feelings. So let’s just cut to the chase and ask God to help us. That’s it.
This is the problem! Right there!
How can you ever build a personal relationship with God if you just keep doing such prayers?
ONE BIBLE PORTION THAT SEEMS TO SUPPORT SHORT PRAYERS IS ACTUALLY DUE TO A MISUNDERSTANDING!
The words of our Lord Jesus have been misunderstood.
Let us read: Matthew chapter 6 verses 7 and 8:
[Mat 6:7 KJV] But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen [do]: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking.[Mat 6:8 KJV] Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him.
Now this seems to be instructing us to do short prayers, right?
OK, let us read another portion about our Lord Jesus:
[Luk 6:12 KJV] And it came to pass in those days, that he went out into a mountain to pray, and continued all night in prayer to God.
QUESTION! Did Jesus do a short prayer here? He continued the whole night in prayer!
So Jesus is not actually instructing us to do short prayers!!
So what did Jesus actually mean in Matthew Chapter 6, verse 7?
[Mat 6:7 KJV] But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions,
The GREEK WORD used here is battalogeō
Pronounced: BATTA-LA-GEYO
It means:
-
to stammer
-
to repeat the same things over and over, to use many idle words, to babble, prate.
Jesus told us NOT TO REPEAT THE SAME THINGS OVER AND OVER WHILE PRAYING!
Some people do lengthy prayers by repeating the same thing over and over. When in group, do short and precise prayers. Also during your personal prayers, there is no need to repeat the same thing over and over.
But during your personal time with God, it’s perfectly normal to talk for hours and go into each and every detail.
There is a difference between REPETITION and DETAILED PRAYER.
Our Lord Jesus did lengthy prayers to God when he was alone and personal with God.
So it’s perfectly normal and desired by God.
Jesus also did short prayers, let us see one example:
John Chapter 11, verses 41 to 43:
[Jhn 11:41 KJV] And Jesus lifted up [his] eyes, and said, Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me.[Jhn 11:42 KJV] And I knew that thou hearest me always: but because of the people which stand by I said [it], that they may believe that thou hast sent me.[Jhn 11:43 KJV] And when he thus had spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth.
So you must know when to pray short prayers and when to pray long prayers.
Long prayers are only for your personal time with God. Don’t get confused.
I encourage you to talk to God. In the example of the house that you want to buy, just go to a secluded place and start talking to God each and every detail about each and every house that you visited. Exactly as how you would discuss with your friend, discuss with God. Just go over each and every detail and ask God as to what he thinks and just keep talking. You would notice that many points and ideas just start coming to your mind. Things that you never thought about before will start coming to your mind. That is how God communicates! Sometimes, he does not say anything at that time, but you would notice that the decision becomes easy as things begin to unfold. Try it and see.
In the same way, if there is nothing particular to pray for, just talk to him about any subject that you are interested in and regarding your plans about the same, and you will soon find that you can easily spend so much time with God.
HOW TO TALK ALONE?
I hear some of you ask me “How Can I Talk Alone To God When There Is No Response Or Reply From God?”
Conversation is 2-way and so when you sit alone and talk to God, it is just a one-way conversation and so it is not possible to sit and talk for hours.
I get you.
But let me ask you a question. How many of you and sit and think alone?
Everyone, right?
You don’t need anyone to help you think. You can sit and think alone for hours together without any company!
All that I am saying is, instead of sitting and thinking alone by yourself, just talk your thoughts aloud to God! Just share it with Him, and you will see how God corresponds to you! Its an experience that you must get for yourself. Try it and see!
SO THIS IS THE FIRST KEY – TO CHOOSE THE SUBJECT THAT IS INTERESTING OR NEEDED FOR YOU AND TALK OR DISCUSS WITH GOD ABOUT IT.
KEY NUMBER 2 TO BUILD A PERSONAL RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD:
2. DO NOT HIDE YOUR EMOTIONS FROM GOD.
This is such an important point. God created emotions. He gave you emotions so that you can display emotions. But Religion has taught us that we must not show our emotions to God. We must accept whatever happens to us and we should never open our mouth to God and never doubt him but always trust that it is for our own good, bla bla bla!
This is wrong and it will NEVER ALLOW YOU to build a personal relationship with God. Never! Let me remind you that God created emotions so that you can display that to him freely. When something goes wrong, go to God and tell him that you are upset and not happy about it. Tell him openly what you feel. Bring it out on God. He can handle it! Just know that YOU ARE NO ONE TO PROTECT GOD. HE CAN HANDLE WHAT YOU ARE SAYING! HE CAN HANDLE YOUR EMOTIONS!
ITS PERFECTLY NORMAL TO GET ANGRY WITH GOD AND EVEN TELL HIM THAT YOU ARE ANGRY WITH HIM. I can see RED FLAGS GOING UP!
LOOK, I AM NOT ENCOURAGING YOU TO FIGHT WITH GOD. I AM TELLING YOU TO BE OPEN WITH GOD ABOUT YOUR FEELINGS AND EMOTIONS. FIGHT WITH HIM IF YOU HAVE TO BUT BEFORE THE END OF THAT PRAYER, RECONCILE WITH HIM.
I WILL GIVE YOU ONE EXAMPLE FROM THE BIBLE THAT WILL ILLUSTRATE THIS TRUTH!
Everyone talks about King David and his Psalms. He is the best song writer in the Bible right? Yet I am going to show you from the Bible, a Psalm where he literally FIGHTS WITH GOD and QUESTIONS GOD. DO YOU KNOW THAT?
Let us read:
Psalm 13
[Psa 13:1 KJV] How long wilt thou forget me, O LORD? for ever? how long wilt thou hide thy face from me?[Psa 13:2 KJV] How long shall I take counsel in my soul, [having] sorrow in my heart daily? how long shall mine enemy be exalted over me?[Psa 13:3 KJV] Consider [and] hear me, O LORD my God: lighten mine eyes, lest I sleep the [sleep of] death;
Do you see that? He keeps questioning God asking How Long Lord, How Long? For Ever? Should I be in sorrow Daily? He keeps on questioning God until he reaches a stage when he says don’t let me die!
So you see the agony of King David and see how he is expressing it openly to God. He is literally fighting with God. But here is the thing, before he ends the prayer, he reconciles with God.
Let us continue to read:
[Psa 13:5 KJV] But I have trusted in thy mercy; my heart shall rejoice in thy salvation.[Psa 13:6 KJV] I will sing unto the LORD, because he hath dealt bountifully with me.
That is his faith in God that no matter what, my God is not going to let me down but he will save me!
This is the same thing as how we want our children to be open with us. Can we have a real relationship with our children if they hide their emotions and feelings from us? Can we have a real relationship? What about Husband and Wife relationship? By hiding our emotions and feelings, do you think we can have a real relationship?
NO WAY!
Its the same thing with God. JUST BE REAL AND OPEN!
This is how you build a personal relationship with God, by expressing your emotions openly to him. Not by hiding it away from him! God Created You, he can handle what you bring to him!
I HEAR SOME OF YOU SAY, CAN A POT QUESTION ITS POTTER?
I’ve heard this preached right from my childhood!
Let us read those verses:
[Isa 45:9 NIV] Does the clay say to the potter, ‘What are you making?’ Does your work say, ‘The potter has no hands’?
[Rom 9:20 NIV] 20 But who are you, a human being, to talk back to God? “Shall what is formed say to the one who formed it, ‘Why did you make me like this?”
These verses seem to tell us NEVER TO TALK BACK TO GOD.
But it is very important to understand the CONTEXT BEHIND THESE VERSES.
One verse is from the Old Testament and One Verse is from the New Testament.
What is the context behind both of these verses?
Let us check.
For the Old Testament Verse:
Let us just go down a couple of verses and read verse 11:
[Isa 45:11 NIV] “This is what the LORD says–the Holy One of Israel, and its Maker: Concerning things to come, do you question me about my children, or give me orders about the work of my hands?
Let us drop down to verse 13:
[Isa 45:13 NIV] I will raise up Cyrus in my righteousness: I will make all his ways straight. He will rebuild my city and set my exiles free, but not for a price or reward, says the LORD Almighty.”
Who is Cyrus?
Cyrus was the KING OF PERSIA. He was a GENTILE.
God Used Cyrus The King Of Persia, a Gentile to REBUILD the city of JERUSALEM AND THE TEMPLE OF GOD!
So the Lord Almighty is asking Israel, who are they to question God, if he wanted to use a GENTILE for his purpose!
LET US NOW EXAMINE THE NEW TESTAMENT verse:
Let us go to verse 24:
[Rom 9:24 NIV] 24 even us, whom he also called, not only from the Jews but also from the Gentiles?
See the Gentiles there again?
Let us read the next verse also:
[Rom 9:25 NIV] 25 As he says in Hosea: “I will call them ‘my people’ who are not my people; and I will call her ‘my loved one’ who is not my loved one,”
So again God is saying that He will call GENTILES HIS PEOPLE and GENTILES HIS LOVED ONES and the people of ISRAEL did not like this, and so Paul was asking them as to who you are to question God’s actions!
So again the context was about showing mercy and salvation to the GENTILES!

So the context in both of these bible portions was about questioning God for his Grace towards the Gentiles and other people. That is it.
Not that we should never show our emotions to God.
SO THIS IS THE SECOND KEY – NOT TO HIDE YOUR EMOTIONS FROM GOD BUT BRING IT OUT TO HIM OPENLY!
KEY NUMBER 3 TO BUILD A PERSONAL RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD:
3. BE CASUAL AND INFORMAL
I already touched upon this point in the beginning. We have been taught by religion to do formal prayers. This is fine and you can and must do it but not all the time!
But, when you go to God and communicate, always remember that you have a father child relationship with him.
Let us read:
[Gal 4:7 NIV] So you are no longer a slave, but God’s child; and since you are his child, God has made you also an heir.
So go freely into your father’s presence.
You can talk to him in any situation and position! You can talk to him while lying down! You can talk to him while eating.
You can talk to him while cooking, driving, walking, travelling, even watching TV or YouTube, working, etc. etc. etc.
That is how you build a personal relationship with God. You have access to God anytime through Jesus who is our High Priest.
You can talk to Yahweh or you can talk to Jesus or you can talk to The Holy Spirit.
Just get started!
Look there are times when you have to get down on your knees and plead with God or cry out to God for an immediate answer or blessing! There is nothing more powerful than your knees when it comes to getting instant answers from God. When you are praying as a group or congregation, be formal and follow the rules.
But when you want to build a personal relationship with God, then you have to be casual and informal. Talk whenever and however you can!
SO THIS IS THE THIRD KEY – TO BE CASUAL AND INFORMAL WHEN TALKING TO GOD!
Just follow these 3 KEYS and start spending QUALITY TIME WITH GOD. The entire purpose of this Power Nugget is to encourage and invite you to build a personal relationship with God like you have never done before!
This Power Nugget has only one aim and that is to get you into a personal relationship with God, and for that I had to break the traditional teaches and man made rules and regulations so that I can shake your existing beliefs and show you new ways of building that beautiful and life long relationship with God.
Before I end this, I would like to just point out 2 things:

Our God is such a cool and loving God but at the same time a CONSUMING FIRE! So DO NOT TAKE OUR GOD FOR GRANTED! Don’t lose the respect and fear that you should have for God. Be Real and Practical. Our Relationship with God is exactly like parents and children. Children are supposed to respect and fear the parents but at the same time, we want them to be friendly and loving to us and spend time with us. We don’t want our children to always come and address us formally and fearfully, right? But at the same time, we don’t want them to lose the fear and respect that they are supposed to have for us! Its the EXACT SAME THING WITH OUR GOD. So just follow that principle. That is all.

Our God Created Us The Way We Are Because He Wanted Us This Way! If God wanted us to behave like slaves or robots and just accept whatever happens and keep thanking him no matter what, he could have easily done it that way. He would have just had to tweak our GENE a bit and made us that way. But he DIDNT DO THAT. HE WANTED US WITH EMOTIONS AND FEELINGS SO THAT WE CAN INTERACT WITH HIM WITH ALL OUR EMOTIONS AND FEELINGS. SO LET US BE REAL WITH HIM.
So I highly encourage you to try and build a personal relationship with God.

I have a personal relationship with God-I had to ask His Holy spirit to come into me in a church service-in front of all but in the congregation-hymns helped me to do this.I had to ask Him to help me heal the man I loved from drinking and fits of rage. I had to love him with God’s love-not my own. Now God has given me special favors in the spirit that are personal between God and myself only.Personal relationship means not like any one else’s relationship with God. My husband was saved eventually and was relieved of his problems on this earth.When he passed God gave us special favors in the spirit and for those we are eternally grateful.
